Luxor

Luxor is the richest historical site in Egypt with a wealth of tombs and temples from the 12th Dynasty onwards. Tourists having been visiting Luxor (Thebes) for thousands of years and you can find graffiti from Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and 19th century Europeans.

The majority of sites are situated on the West Bank of the Nile, the only exceptions being Karnak and Luxor temples. All the rest are here on the West Bank, arguably the less commercial and least spoilt side of Luxor. (Put it like this - McDonald's is on the East Bank :). By staying on the West Bank you save both time and money by avoiding continual Nile crossings before you can even start your days sightseeing.

This is a small selection of the sites you can see on the West Bank:

Mortuary Temple of Seti I
Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut (Deir el Bahri)
Mortuary Temple of Ramses II (the Ramasseum)
Mortuary Temple of Ramses III(Medinet Habu)
Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III (Colossi of Memnon)
Valley of the Kings with the tombs of Tutankamon, Ramses Vi, Seti I, Amenhotep II
Valley of the Queens including the recently restored tomb of Nefertari
Tombs of the Nobles, highlights being Nakt, Rahmose, Rekhmire
Workman's village and tombs (Deir el Medina)

These can be visited in a variety of ways by taxi, bicycle or even by donkey. Arranging your tours locally will get you cheaper prices and the money stays in the local economy rather than the tour operators. We can give you a list of fixed price tours arranged with our local contacts.

Other Luxor attractions are boat trips along the Nile to Banana Island, sunset on felucca sailing boats, local weddings and meals in local homes.

Outside Luxor popular trips are to Dendera, Abydos, Esna and Edfu and less common, overnight tours to places further afield like Beni Hasan, Tel al-Amarna and the Western Oases.
